DON'T CONFUSE THIS ENGINE WITH AUTOMOTIVE PISTON ENGINES CONVERTED TO AIRCRAFT USE or SO-CALLED ALTERNATIVE ENGINES. The Wankel rotary has a much better power to weight ratio and power to size ratio than any automotive piston engine. It is also far more robust and will withstand ungodly amounts of turbo boost with out major structural failure. Any piston engine operating at aircraft power levels has a limited life. That is the reason for a TBO. The moving parts are magnafluxed for cracks at TBO. The cracks are caused by reversing stress on the crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons and valve parts. Bend metal back and fourth long enough and it will crack or fail.

The rotary has no reversing stress in the 3 moving parts. They are eccentric shaft and two rotors. It is similar to an electric motor and there are many 100 year old electric motors still working. Automotive piston engines are not designed for aircraft power levels and should not be used. The average power required for a car engine is 30 to 40 HP! In other words car piston engines are low duty cycle engines. Aircraft engines are high duty cycle. The Wankel rotary is an inadvertent high duty cycle exception due to the unique mechanical geometry.

The Mazda rotary has a reputation for using a lot of gas around town. That is true but the difference at aircraft power levels is only 2 or 3%. This pails into insignificance as the big savings come from burning low cost car gas. Car gas is half the cost of aviation fuel 100LL and up to $1 cheaper than diesel fuel. The lead in 100LL is required by most aircraft engines to lubricate the exhaust valves. The rotor exhaust ported Wankel has no exhaust valves.

TURBO COMPOUND is now universally used on Formula One racing engines for 15% better fuel efficiency. Honda is in the process of building a Turbo Compound Hybrid Formula One engine for use by McLaren in 2015. When using electric motor turbo assist you get a turbo compound feature for free by making the motor a DC motor. The motor acts as a generator when not needed to accelerate the turbo charger. This is what is done in Formula one. However you are losing up to 20% of the recoverable energy in the exhaust due to the inefficiency of electric motors and generators. This was mentioned in my presentation at the World Motor Sport Symposium in 2008. Still worth doing never the less as when cruising at steady speeds on the freeway some energy is being recovered from the exhaust.

RUMOR HAS IT that Mazda is working on a Formula One style 350 HP (possible 450 HP if the 16B engine is used) turbo compound hybrid sports car weighing 2800 pounds for introduction in 2016 or 2017. The Mazda rotary implementation will work the best as there are no exhaust valves to waste exhaust energy. The Mazda Wankel rotary engine is the smallest and the lightest intermittent internal combustion engine for its HP output.

COMBINATION PSRU ADAPTER PLATE AND MOTOR MOUNT. Saves the weight and cost of a Schertz beam (10 pounds) and is lighter (6 pounds) than Tracy Crook's adapter plate (7.5 pounds). The loads on the spacers are reduced greatly as they no longer transmit prop torque loads to the motor mounts located on an oil pan spacer plate (another 8 pounds) if used. Think about it. Prop torque is 2.85 times higher than engine torque due to the gear box reduction. Engine torque on a Mazda rarely exceeds 200 foot pounds even with a p-port or turbo. Prop torque on the other hand is 567 foot pounds due to the gearing. This torque is reacted directly by this motor plate. There fore loads on the spacer and bolts is greatly reduced with less chance of misalignment.

Send us the dimensions relative to the pilots lower right hard point of the firewall hard points, thrust line location and length of the cowl if any to the prop flange. We will send you a kit of parts including one inch diameter, .049 wall, 4130 tubes cut to proper length. End fittings listed separately below and Teflon lined rod ends included. Here is the type of Teflon to purchase for lining the slide throttle. Very important. Not all Teflon is created equal. Some has a higher coefficient of friction leading to higher forces on the throttle. Particularly with the 3 rotor version. In that case use a 2:1 lever to increase the throttle travel and reduce the force by half.
